Sourcing Freshwater Pearls in China: Grades and Value

Freshwater pearls are the largest pearl category produced in China by volume, and the trading centre is Zhuji, near Shaoxing in Zhejiang, where most of the world's freshwater output changes hands year-round. What you can buy there is not one product but a range: round beads for classic strands, and baroque, oval and teardrop shapes that no two of them match.

Specify grades, not adjectives

"Good quality" is not a spec. Ask for the five things that actually move the price:

• Lustre — the sharpness of the reflection; the first thing to compare between two samples.
• Nacre thickness — the layered coating on the bead; thin nacre chips and loses lustre.
• Shape — round and symmetrically baroque carry the premium; irregular baroque is a design category of its own.
• Colour — white, cream, pink, lavender and peach are all common, and consistency down a strand matters more than the tone itself.
• Blemish — visible pits and wrinkles, and how many are allowed per strand.

The step that saves the most money is writing the grade down before you order: lustre level, minimum nacre, permitted blemishes, and a colour range that applies to a strand rather than to loose beads. Then judge samples in natural light, because no photograph reproduces lustre.

Edison and large-mound pearls

The Edison type covers the large, strongly coloured freshwater pearls that compete with saltwater on size and finish. If your line depends on a substantial bead — statement necklaces, chokers, fashion watches — that is the category to specify. If your line is fine, classic and repeated, standard round beads cost less and string more consistently.

Pairing pearls with metal

A pearl line becomes one coordinated product when the metal is specified alongside the pearl.
