Agate is a banded variety of quartz. The bands are laid down by the mineral slowly growing inside a cavity, so the pattern is structural rather than printed on. Cut across the right axis, a tumble-polished agate bead shows concentric bands. Cut the wrong way and the same stone looks like plain grey quartz.
Color is the part to be explicit about. Untreated agate keeps whatever color its bands formed with — usually grey, white and sometimes a warm tint. Most of the strong orange, red, blue and green banding sold as agate has been dyed, because the trade wants colors the stone does not produce on its own. Dyed agate is a completely normal product and a good one for a price ladder. What is not normal is describing it as natural color. If you order the enhanced option, your listing says dyed or color-enhanced, and that is what is on the spec sheet.
The bead is not metal; the findings are. Agate is quartz, so it is the clasp, end caps and any spacer that carry the metal compliance. Those tested parts are checked against EN 1811 nickel-release. See compliance and testing.
Specify before we quote: untreated or enhanced, bead shape and size, target strand length, cord or thread type, clasp and findings metal, your target price band and quantity.
What the samples show: a colour range running from translucent green and glossy black through red, orange, yellow, pink and purple, plus multi-colour mixes — strung as elastic stretch fits and multi-wrap styles, most with small turquoise-coloured accent beads at the closure. Which colours are the stone's own and which come from the colour-enhanced option is exactly what the two grades separate: the grade you buy is the one named on the spec sheet, and we do not grade a purchase from photos.
FAQ
Is dyed agate still agate? Yes. Dyeing is a finishing step on a real stone of the same mineral family. What changes is the wording: dyed agate is dyed agate, and it should not be listed as naturally colored. We put the treatment on the spec sheet so your listing can match.
Why do some strands look more uniform than others? Because dyed strands are matched after dyeing. If uniformity is what your market buys, say so in the RFQ — it costs more per bead and we will quote it as a matched grade.
Can I mix agate with other beads? Yes. Mixed strands with tiger's eye or metal beads are both workable; give us the bead order and ratio.
How long does a bead bracelet order take? Agate beads and findings are stock components and the strand is assembled by hand, so samples take about 15 days and bulk production runs about 25 days from your approved sample.
Are the bright colours in the photos dyed? The saturated ones usually are — untreated agate keeps to grey, white and warm tints, and most strong reds, greens, blues and purples come from the colour-enhanced option. That is exactly why the two grades exist and why the spec sheet names the one that shipped. Name the colours you want in your RFQ and we quote the grade that produces them.

How this bead bracelet is verified
- Bead material: built in agate stone — every bead is checked by eye at incoming QC for colour consistency, hole alignment and surface defects, then re-checked after stringing.
- Treatment disclosure: bead material can be natural or treated (stabilised, dyed or heat-treated). Whichever you order is written on the spec sheet — we do not sell treated stone as untreated.
- Metal parts only: the clasp, end caps and any metal findings are the only metal in the piece and are checked against EN 1811 / EN 12472 nickel-release before shipment (see compliance & testing).
- Cord & construction: elastic or waxed cord is specified by diameter, stretch and knot finish — the cord is a textile, so we spec it but make no metal-free certification claim for it.
