Stainless Steel Pendants & Necklaces: A B2B Buyer's Guide

By Steve · · Red-line checked 2026-10-14

When you are building a stainless steel necklace or pendant line, most of the cost and most of the returns risk sit in decisions made before the first sample. This guide walks through the choices a buyer actually has to make — pendant type, chain, plating, dimensions, compliance — and the questions worth putting to a factory. It is written for brands, wholesalers and retailers sourcing OEM or white-label stainless steel jewelry, not for end consumers.

Before you brief a factory, it helps to name the style you want. Our Stainless Steel Necklace and Pendant Style Reference collects ten common styles into one shared vocabulary, so your quote starts from a specification rather than a guess.

Pendant types and how they are made

Pendant type Base process Best finish What to watch
Disc / coin Stamped or CNC-cut from sheet PVD gold or rose, or mirror polish Flat faces take laser engraving well
Bar Stamped bar, sometimes bent PVD or polished Minimalist lines; pairs with a box chain
Dog tag Stamped, deburred edges PVD gunmetal / black Matte or sandblasted finish common
Charm Cast or stamped shape PVD colour or enamel fill Detail depends on casting quality
Hollow / open Laser-cut or press-formed PVD or polished Lighter weight, lower material cost
Initial / letter Cast or CNC PVD gold / rose Script vs block changes tooling

The base metal is almost always 316L stainless steel for its low nickel release and corrosion resistance; 304 is a lower-cost alternative where skin-contact rules are lighter.

Chain types

Chain Typical width Pairs with Notes
Box 1.0–2.5 mm Disc, bar, initial Clean, modern; holds the pendant centred
Curb 1.5–4.0 mm Dog tag, chunky charms Classic, durable
Snake 1.0–3.0 mm Small disc, minimalist Smooth, flexible
Rope 2.0–4.0 mm Statement pendants Twist catches the light
Cable / link 1.0–3.0 mm Most pendants Versatile, easy to resize

Chain width and clasp type are part of the spec, not an afterthought — they change how the pendant sits and how the piece wears. Use our bracelet and necklace size calculator to set lengths and tolerances before sampling.

Plating and finish

For coloured finishes, PVD vacuum plating is the standard route on stainless steel. It deposits a hard ceramic film — typically titanium nitride for gold tones — at 0.1–3 µm, far harder and more colour-stable than a conventional gold plate. Water electroplating remains the right choice for a plain gold tone at the lowest price point. Specify the compound and the thickness in microns; a vague "gold" tells a factory nothing.

Why 316L, and the skin-contact question

316L is the default for pieces in skin contact because its nickel release sits far below the EN 1811:2015 limit of 0.2 µg/cm²/week. An intact PVD or electroplated layer adds a further barrier between skin and steel. The compliance conversation moves to the coating once a finish is applied, so scope the test to the plating, not just the base. Our compliance and testing page lists the methods we verify per order: EN 1811 / EN 12472 nickel release, ASTM B117 salt spray, and PVD thickness by XRF.

How to specify a pendant line (step by step)

  1. Name the pendant type and reference style so the factory quotes the same object.
  2. Choose the chain type and width to match the pendant's weight and look.
  3. Specify the plating: compound, colour and thickness in microns (PVD TiN for gold).
  4. Set dimensions, tolerances and clasp type using the size calculator as a baseline.
  5. Confirm MOQ, lead time and whether the sample fee offsets the bulk order.
  6. Approve a physical sample under agreed lighting before production.
  7. Lock the spec in writing so re-orders stay consistent.

That sequence prevents most of the problems buyers run into — vague briefs are where colour, size and plating disagreements start.

FAQ

What plating should I specify for a pendant that won't fade?

PVD is the right default for mid and premium stainless steel pendants. It bonds a hard ceramic film — usually titanium nitride for gold tones — at 0.1–3 µm, far more wear-resistant than a conventional gold plate and slower to show the abrasion that fades electroplated finishes first.

Is 316L stainless steel safe for sensitive skin?

Yes, when the base is 316L and the finish is intact. Under EN 1811:2015 the nickel-release limit is 0.2 µg/cm²/week; 316L releases far below that, and a PVD or plated layer sits between skin and steel. Risk rises only if the coating is breached on a non-compliant substrate.

How do I keep a pendant line consistent across re-orders?

Lock the spec in writing: pendant type, chain, plating compound and thickness, dimensions and clasp. Approve a physical sample under defined lighting, then reference that approved sample on every re-order so colour and size stay matched.

What chain width works with a small disc pendant?

A 1.0–2.5 mm box or snake chain keeps a small disc or bar pendant centred and proportionate. Wider curb or rope chains suit heavier dog tags and statement charms; match width to the pendant's visual weight, not only to price.

Do I need a sample before a bulk stainless steel pendant order?

Yes. A sample confirms the design is producible, the plating matches the reference, and dimensions are within tolerance before you commit to a bulk run. Send a complete brief up front so the sample does not need repeated revisions.

Who actually makes the pendant — a factory or a trading company?

Ask directly and verify. A real stainless steel jewelry manufacturer in China runs its own casting, plating and QC; a trader relays the same steps to a subcontractor. The difference shows up in lead time, re-order consistency and how problems get fixed.

Next step

Specifying a pendant line for production? Send us your design and finish and we will scope plating, MOQ and lead time. For custom stainless steel pendants or 316L wholesale, the same spec process applies — start from a written brief and an approved sample. Orders run on EXW or DDP terms.

Where these facts come from

FSC CRAFT keeps this list to pages that can actually be checked. Test reports and material specs ship per order on request rather than as published pass/fail numbers. If you quote this page, keep these links intact so the claim stays traceable.
