Jewelry box – Rigorous quality inspection from inside to outside before leaving the factory
A qualified jewelry box cannot simply be produced by random assembly. In the final stage, the factory will conduct a comprehensive “check-up” on each box, covering aspects such as durability, safety, and even the subtle texture and smell. There is no room for any ambiguity. It’s like conducting a check on a newborn baby – every indicator must meet the standards.
Let’s start with the “most violent” physical inspection. After all, jewelry boxes are bound to get knocked around in daily use. The scratch test is like giving the “skin” of the box an anti-pressure training. The quality inspector holds a metal pen with a hardness similar to a key and moves it back and forth on the box surface. The force is controlled just like accidentally bumping into a hard object. If even a faint white mark is left, the box must be re-forged. After all, no one wants the newly purchased box to have an imprint when putting in jewelry because of a ring bumping it.
The drop test is more like simulating the “moment of failure”. Workers will put the box with the simulated jewelry inside, and drop it from a height of 80 centimeters. This height is approximately at the level of an adult’s knee. After dropping it three times in a row, they need to carefully check if the lid can fit tightly, if the hinges are loose, and if the inner lining has come out. Once a box was dropped and the corners of the inner lining were slightly curled, it was immediately marked as “rework”.
Some things may look good on the surface but they still need to be safe. Chemical testing specifically focuses on those invisible hazards, such as heavy metals. Workers will take a few samples from each batch of boxes, cut a small piece of leather or lining and send it to the laboratory. Using professional instruments for testing, the content of harmful substances like lead and cadmium must be lower than one-fifth of the national standard.
After all, jewelry boxes often come into contact with the skin, especially when storing valuable jewelry. No one wants to have unseen harm sneaking up on them.
After the machine inspection, it still needs to be “scrutinized” by human hands. The tactile inspectors are all experienced professionals. They wear gloves and gently touch the surface of the box, from the edges to the corners. Even with their eyes closed, they can distinguish an imperfection of 0.1 millimeters, just as sensitive as detecting scratches on a mobile phone screen.
The odor evaluation team is more like “smell experts”. They tightly seal the box and let it stand for five minutes, then open it to smell. A qualified box should either have no smell or only a faint leather fragrance. If there is a pungent glue smell or paint smell, even if it is very faint, it will be rejected. “The box for jewelry should always make customers feel comfortable when they hold it,” said the elder lady of the evaluation team. Once, a batch of boxes had a slight odor because they used a new batch of glue, and the entire workshop had to rework and change the glue just for that slight difference that was almost undetectable.
From being “violently” dropped, to being “scanned” by instruments, and then being carefully touched and smelled, each jewelry box has to pass through these numerous checkpoints. People in the factory often say: “The more strict the quality inspection is, the more reassuring the customers will feel when they receive it.” After all, it’s precious jewelry that’s being packed. The box itself also needs to be worthy of that preciousness.
