Honest answer: high-quality 316L stainless steel is hypoallergenic for most people, but it is low-nickel, not nickel-free. The nickel is locked inside the alloy and released onto the skin at a rate far below the EU safety limit. If you have a clinically diagnosed nickel allergy, “low release” is not the same as “none,” and that distinction is the whole story.

“Hypoallergenic” is a marketing word, not a regulated or tested standard for jewelry. No agency certifies a necklace as hypoallergenic. For sensitive skin the only useful question is: what is it made of, and how much nickel does it release?
Does stainless steel contain nickel? Yes.
This surprises people, because steel is the metal most often recommended for sensitive ears — yet 316L is roughly 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel and 2–3% molybdenum. Any claim that 316L is “nickel-free” is false. The reason it is still safe for most wearers is not the absence of nickel; it is that the nickel barely leaves the metal.
Release, not presence
A nickel allergy is triggered by nickel ions migrating onto the skin, not by nickel sitting bound inside an alloy. In well-made 316L, the high chromium and molybdenum form a dense, stable passive layer that holds nickel in the crystal structure, so very little reaches the skin through contact and sweat. The EU (REACH Annex XVII) caps nickel release from skin-contact jewelry at 0.5 µg/cm²/week, and from piercing posts at 0.2. Quality 316L sits well under those limits. That is the real meaning of “hypoallergenic steel”: measured low release.
304 vs 316L — the grade that matters

304 is common and corrosion-resistant, but without molybdenum its passive layer is less durable, so it can release a little more nickel over time, especially with sweat. 316L adds molybdenum, which sharply improves corrosion resistance and locks nickel in more reliably. Who should still be cautious
- Confirmed nickel allergy. Roughly 10–20% of people have some nickel sensitivity; a diagnosed case can react even to low-release 316L. Titanium or niobium (no nickel) are the honest choice.
- Fresh piercings. Healing skin is far more reactive. Piercing professionals recommend implant-grade titanium or niobium for initial piercings, not steel.
- Heavy sweaters. Prolonged moisture accelerates passive-layer breakdown and raises nickel release. Wipe jewelry dry after workouts.
How to tell if a piece is genuinely skin-safe
- Look for a stated grade — “316L” or “surgical stainless steel” — not a vague “hypoallergenic” label.
- Prefer a smooth, polished surface; rough or worn finishes release more nickel.
- For colored pieces, a quality PVD coating seals the base metal better than cheap plating.
For buyers specifying ranges, pair the grade decision with finish and minimum order quantity — they change both the care story you give customers and the unit cost.
